A STUDIO DIARY - Tavira, Portugal

Yo!

I’m sitting on our couch here in the good old Dick Tank, listening to world renowned violinist Pekka Kuusisto record the glockenspiel for a track called “Hidden Rainbow”. Hard to keep a straight face. There’s a crazy winter storm outside, but luckily it’s always warm and cozy in the Tank.

The three of us (Johannes, Kari and myself) have just returned from a two week recording trip to Southern Portugal, to a little fishing town called Tavira in Algarve. The trip proved to be both efficient and thoroughly enjoyable, and the album has taken a massive leap forward this past month. We left Finland with about 200 kilos of hardware for recording along with a set of about 25 potential album tracks. In Portugal, we had time to work on roughly ten, and a good number of these are already beginning to sound close to complete. A lot of work remains to be done, but time waits for no one, and the album will Mos Definitely be released in spring 2006. You have my word.

It’s still almost impossible to tell which of the 25 songs currently being worked will make the final cut. At least we have a big heap of material to choose from, and that heap is just about as colorful and diverse as it’s ever been. In any case, a ruthless process of elimination awaits us, and that’s something we haven’t gone through before. But just cruising around on the Portuguese roads, with a brand new 18 track demo cd booming in the car stereo, we were all finding it hard to contain our enthusiasm.

Seeing that spring is still some ways off, we thought we’d share a couple of entries from our Tavira journal, just to make the wait a bit more bearable. So here goes.
